Of course the plane can take off, because IT IS NOT A CAR ... and thus "the ground moving in the opposite direction" DOESNT REALLY MATTER (the wheels just turn a bit faster). The PROPULSION comes from "the PROPELLER / JET ENGINE" and the THRUST is not affected by that conveyer belt. The plane starts with ZERO MOVEMENT and if the conveyor belt starts running ... INERTIA would dictate that THE WHEELS START TURNING and the plane stays where it is. The only reason why the plane moves backward is friction in the axle ...

The biggest problem is probably that you have to take all the energy from ONE flywheel which - at the beginning - is spinning very fast. This makes the brakeing rather difficult due to putting MAXIMUM STRAIN on them at the start. A better but far more complicated solution would be to have 2-3 flywheels which are spinning at different speeds and are used at different times ... one to actually make the flywheel start moving (the point which requires most energy ... but not necessarily most rotational speed) to then increase the speed in several stages, which is where increased flywheel speed would be needed.

A really important bit for "speed" is NOT MAKING THE SHOP INTO A MESS ... and always keeping it clean and returning tools to the spot where they should be! You just have to figure out how long you need to "clean the workplace" EVERY DAY ... at the end of your work day. 15 minutes might be enugh most of the time.

NEVER "subvert expectations" on purpose ... it already ruined Star Wars and is just a lazy way of saying "I dont care about the world I create my story in and can do whatever". As long as it is your own world that is fine ... but Star Wars and Star Trek have been ruined by writers who dont care about the universe and its rules.

5:00 Lightsabers would be a stupid idea to have now ... because you couldnt use them anywhere. The one technology this world NEEDS is "fusion power" or something like that ... which would enable all the rest. Without "pocket power" lightsabers and whatnot wont work, but lightsabers have their crystals ... so the power system from them wouldnt work with big spaceships.

Wind tunnel tests are not the same as "drive and measure how much was used from the fuel tank" comparisons ... especially if the "secret" is an "air cushion" around the golf ball dimples, which they might not be able to show in a wind tunnel.
