I think your brother did the right thing by leaving the relationship instead of leading the person on or lieing to them about continuing to have feelings for them. You are betraying yourself and your partner doing that and you will both be miserable because being with someone you have falling out of love with is going to cause resentment towards them and they will feel it and feel that there is no love and be hurt. If you find the right person your love doesn't stop or weaken and isn't a choice or forced. It comes naturally. It grows harder and stronger as the relationship grows. I have been with the love of my life for almost 7 years and I love him way more now then I did in the honeymoon stage and he feels the same about me and I feel that stronger love and he feels my stronger love which makes us both extremely happy. That's what people deserve not fake love.
