Nothing tanks service quality like guaranteed government income. I could understand making a government competitor medical program to try lower costs by reducing the profit motive, but the problem with just having them take over the entire industry is motivation. Instead of making it a good experience and as relatively painless as possible, it becomes a huge wait list and bureaucracy with no guarantee of service. Look at USSR. They didn't even give people painkillers for dental work because they had a limited supply and needed to control it.
