Unfortunately as the uk is now forced to trade on WTO rules we have to impose the same tariffs on food imports from Ireland as we do on the rest of the world. This is without taking into account the rather unlevel playing field of state subsidies in the agriculture sector under the CAP which may result in even higher tariffs on all eu goods. I'm not sure how the French will take to Ireland selling their surplus production there - they can get a bit touchy when the mood takes them.

Jim Knight We don't "need" to apply tariffs at all unless we choose, however in the absence of a trade agreement endorsed by the WTO we have to impose any tariffs equally to all nations. This means that whereas at the moment we are obliged (under EU rules) to impose an average of 30% on beef imports from outside the EU from next year should we choose to have tariffs on imports we will have to impose the same rates on EU production as we do the rest of the world. This effectively means Irish, and other EU, producers will take a 30% hit on their prices.
