I think he miscalculated and now doesn't know how to extract himself. Even though I agree he's playing the long game, this has been a disaster on many levels. Caspian Report did a vid before all this started about how Russia lost a lot of geographic military advantage w/ the breakup of the USSR. I think it plays into it what we are seeing.
