Nothing is off the table though, especially in those days. He could have stumbled across code books in the library or had the idea planted in his head through association. He seems more like a "I'm going to show everybody how smart I am" type of person. I'm 100% he was at that base, 50/50 the code school or washout. He's also more familiar with the area than the average person. These lovers lanes and stuff, that's a local thing. I think the odds are high he had some sort of relationship with the first female victim, the rest is a smoke screen.

Just skimming the Graysmith book now. I can't really take it seriously after the beginning of the investigation was so fouled up and waiting 20-30 years to search the house? The cops who interviewed him at the oil refinery? No. Go in there knowing you are going to arrest or don't go. Don't hint around and put his Ex friends down in So Cal in danger. That's why people don't come forward with information because their asses will be left hanging out in the wind. And whenever somebody tells the cops "hey this guy is smart, even smarter than you" they blow it off. They botched the beginning of the investigation and it snowballed.
