Perhaps it can be explained far simpler, as you get older you develop a bigger ego and more competitive nature, which want to balance each other out. If you're a runner and you come in last in a race, you take a bid blow to your ego and your competitive nature kicks in and makes you want to try harder and do better, to make up for your low ego. Next race you win, and your ego goes into overload and your competitive nature all but stops. The race after that because your competitive nature has shut down and your ego is on overload you think you are guaranteed to win, and you race and lose. This makes your ego shrink and your competitive nature kicks back in making you try and work harder again. All of this eventually balances out and you start performing at your mean potential. You don't need someone else praising/yelling at you giving you positive/negative reinforcement, you are your own worse critic and that's all you need to positively/negatively reinforce yourself.

Perhaps in Britain small acts of kindness and people coming together to help each other is happening, but not in the U.S., more than not people are still being selfish and only thinking of themselves, as is evidenced by them going to grocery stores and buying up all the products others also need, like toilet paper, and refusing to wear masks to help slow the spread and to help protect not just themselves, but everyone around them. The U.S. has become the prime example of what NOT to do during a pandemic, and it's unfortunate that those that are doing those random acts of kindness are being over shadowed by the stupidity of so many others.
