I think the good criterion is this: if you can afford mortgage/rent, student loan payment, 1-2 car payments, food and medical insurance for you, wife and 2-3 kids with a single income, you're middle class. I also thought about maxing out 401(k) contribution, but it would probably push the minimal amount too far up.
