Society stopped being really traditional back in the end of 19th century at least(and some people argue that even christianity as a whole is modernist actually). Therefore when conservatives try to CONSERVE the society of 1950s or 1990s, all that they do is actually fighting to preserve one specific stage of modernism and prevent avoid the further transformations.
