Yes, but how probable is that it will happen in the next few hundred years?

@silverwolf6866 well, again, considering the low probability of the event and the fact that ANY self-sustainable colony on Mars would require spending trendous amounts of resourses(and even possibility of it being sustainable is not guaranteed), yes playing this russian roulette is better.

I don't see how people would survive on Mars long-term. I think if Elon tries it, it will be a huge resources sink

Manned missions to Mars COULD have been possible by then, we literally had NERVA engine to do it, the problem is that colonizing it is much much more difficult than just sending a manned mission, specifically because of harsh conditions there. If Mars was like Earth there would already have been settlements there

Analogy(especially a bad one) is not an argument

@Nemophilist850 what is the probability of such huge asteroid impact? It never happened in the past

@thomaskalbfus2005 industrialization makes humanity more resistant to natural disasters, not less

I think we will have FTL before Mars of Venus colonization

Basically no one believed that earth is flat when Columbus lived

The problem is that we'll likely become FTL before we terraform Mars, and then we'll be searching for planets with water and atmosphere, thus the terraforming problems we'll encounter(filling atmosphere with oxigen and creating a biosphere) won't be practiceable on Mars at the time we start colonizing other planets

@richardbaird1452 we don't really need completely new physics(at least it's not required), we just need to learn how to generate negative mass-energy density. And FTL already proven to be theoretically possible because it's based on general relativity. It will just most likely be quite complicated and require hudreds of years to be developed

@danhouck how those things are even supposed to lead to extinction?

The good thing is that intelligent AI seem to be a very far future thing
