  2. Having worked in a old folks home I can guarantee it. If prisoners were treated that way they would all go completely crazy and guards wouldn't be able to do a thing.

  3. 95% of the time when I hear someone say they are open minded, it becomes apparent very quickly that they don't know what objective reality is and have never contemplated it. I've brought this up to people and watched their brains short circuit, some just glazed over and never became clear again, others as the conversation progressed and we categorized things that are objective and things that are subjective you can see their eyes become more clear. To answer your question, it is because they have never contemplated this concept and are like a blind person feeling their way through a hoarders garage trying to understand the layout of a garden.
