I don't think that anyone wants population to grow forever. Nobody in the Netherlands says they would like to one day have 2 billion people in the country. But declining population can still be a concern for a number of reasons. Korea may fall from 51 million people to 15.6 million people by the end of the century. If that continues another 77 years then in 2078 Korea may have only 4 million people by then. Is that what the people of Korea desire to happen? And even more concerning by 2070 half of the people in Korea will be aged 63 or older. Who is going to work to pay the pensions of all those people?

Chinese demographers actually have estimated that in a "worst case scenario" by the end of the century China will have only 525 million people and will have a working age population of only 250 million people. I suspect that within 100 years the United States will surpass China for population. Even more shockingly I suspect that by 2200 Canada will surpass China for population.

I find it hard to believe that in 2050 the difference between the number of males and females in China will be only about 13 million out of a total population of 1.2 billion or so. That's a difference in the numbers of males and females of only 2% or so. I've read that the percentage difference between young men and women in China is more like 20%. I understand that with the one child policy ending the proportion of male and female babies will go back to normal but the one child policy was in practice for decades and almost all the babies born in that time will still be alive in 2050. The policy was in place for about 36 years from 1980 to 2016. The babies born in 1980 will be just 70 years old in 2050. So in 2050 age groups between the ages of 34 and 70 will likely have significantly fewer women than men. That's a huge age range with far fewer women so I am skeptical about the difference for the entire population being only 2%.

Canada's population grew by 3.2% last year, one of the highest rates of increase of any country in the world. The rate of increase is likely to be over 4% this year.
