Yes, the ambassador got every Russian lie spot on. His dictator will be happy with that so the ambassador can now have a little longer without being recalled to Russia and imprisoned. Unless Putin notices how nervous and unconvincing the ambassador looked spouting Russian lies and propaganda. That could get him imprisoned.

And then what happens to a western citizen such as journalist imprisoned in Russia for simply doing their job when there are no longer any western embassies to help them?

No. It that would end diplomatic relations with Russia and that's a bad idea. As tempting as that is the more horrific a regime is the more important it is that Western countries keep up diplomatic relationships with that regime's country. If Britain doesn't have an embassy in Sweden and a British person gets into trouble legally or otherwise in Sweden that's not a big deal because Sweden is a democratic country with human rights and rule of law and also a British representative can easily fly to Sweden to help out that British citizen. Also, in Sweden it is unlikely that authorities would make up charges against someone for political reasons such as their actions as a journalist. In countries like Russia and China though it is quite conceivable that the regimes might make up charges against someone (eg a journalist) for political reasons and the prisons are likely very nasty places to be and there is no rule of law or human rights guarantee and little hope of a fair trial so it is really important to have a British embassy there to assist a British citizen in legal trouble in those countries. One footnote though: obviously western countries should quickly expel any foreign diplomat from an autocratic country like Russia, China or Iran who is involved in interfering in the country or threatening or bribing people in the country or who has been caught trying to steal government or corporate secrets or technology. Western countries have been far too slow to do that.

Impossible. There are no real reporters left in Russia - they've all been imprisoned, forced into exile, silenced or killed. The only "media" left in Russia are stooges who act as propagandists for the Russian regime.
