@breakthrough8628 It would be nice if you made an basic effort to learn about the benefits of trade. Sure the United States can produce a lot more goods for itself but those goods will cost a lot more money and there will be less of them. Without trade the United States people will be poorer and have a lower standard of living. And some products such as aluminum and oil the United States is not capable of producing enough for itself without imports from Canada. The United States doesn't have the right oil refinery mix to refine all the oil it produces and would need to build a significant number of new oil refineries to deal with that and that's not going to happen. The United States hadn't built a major new oil refinery in almost half a century and oil companies aren't going to do it now when they can't know how much demand for oil there will be in 25 years as green energy takes over.

@breakthrough8628 How did tariffs work out as a negotiating tactic in 1930? Oh right. They were a disaster and led to the depression becoming much worse in the United States. A Senate website describes the 1930 tariff legislation as being one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history. Unfortunately Trump never reads anything about history or anything else.
