@RangerB66 sorry but that's not true. No fan of Russia but most experts feel that the main reason why Japan surrendered when it did was because the Soviet Union declared war on Japan. That is what fits best with the timing of the surrender. The Japanese emperor and government may have said that they were surrendering as a result of the American atomic bombs because it was less humiliating to say Japan could not continue when confronted with weapons of immense power but the timing of the surrender suggests it was actually the Soviet declaration of war that tipped the balance. It could be that the Japanese had hoped (reasonably) that the United States would not be willing to put up with the horrific casualties that would occur in trying to invade Japan (and that was the case) but that the Japanese figured that Stalin valued his troops so little that he wouldn't care how many of his soldiers died during an invasion of Japan. Also, being occupied by the American or British was one thing but the prospect of being invaded by the Soviets would have been a horrendous fate for Japan. As well it likely is true that Japan wanted to surrender as soon as possible to the Americans, British and Canadians before the Soviet Union had more time to seize Asian territory occupied by Japan.
