An interesting strategy that may work to increase the value of the ruble in the short term but which will in the months and years ahead further isolate Russia and damage it's economy as foreign buyers add this as just one more complication in dealing with Russia and thus switch to other suppliers and to renewable energy or even to subsidizing home insulation. Do people think that in the long run Venezuela would help it's economy by insisting that all foreign buyers use Venezuelan currency when buying fossil fuels from Venezuela? Likely not. And of course what Russia and Venezuela need most is not more of their own currencies but rather more hard currency from abroad such as American dollars. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
