I remember hearing the claim that the reason why the United States increased its involvement in fighting wars in the Middle East in the 1990s and 2000s was that with the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union and with a certain book about "the end of history" American taxpayers started questioning why the United States still had to spend so much money on a huge military and wanted a peace dividend in lower military spending and thus lower taxes so those running the military industrial complex tried to find new enemies to justify maintaining high military spending. If that was what happened and Jake is right about the consequences of the invasion into Iraq and belicose language by American political leaders then those leaders of the American military industrial complex have certainly got what they wanted. That doesn't change the fact that Iraq then and North Korea and Russia today have had extremely brutal, oppressive, aggressive dictators. Plus Russia was already behaving in an Imperialist way towards its neighbours before the American nvasion into Iraq.
