In 2003 the Americans (with some help) took just over a month to conquer all of Iraq even though outnumbered by the Iraqi army which was considered one of the strongest military forces in the world. And fewer than 200 American and Allied troops died, likely many due to "friendly fire". One can argue if the invasion should have taken place and one can say that the "peace" that followed was much more difficult to win but the contrast to the Russian struggles to try to take Bakhmut shows that aside from nuclear weapons the Russian military is not remotely at the same level as the American military. @davidcooks2379 given the Russian military's abysmal performance in Ukraine it is clear that it is not remotely in the same league as the American military which took just over a month to destroy the Iraqi military which at the time was considered one of the most powerful military forces in the world. Sure Russia has lots of nuclear weapons but starting a nuclear war is just a really stupid, inefficient way to commit suicide.

According to Wikipedia for the extremely difficult Normandy landings battle the allies had about three times as many troops (not counting navy and air force) as did the Germans. But I suspect that given that only 10,000 out of 156,000 Allied soldiers became casualties it is likely that many of those 156,000 landed after the beaches had been secured because surely a lot more than 1 in 15 of the first waves of allied soldiers were wounded or killed. I believe that a book I read about the Normandy landings said that soldiers heading in on one of the first waves were told beforehand that likely out of every 3 of them only one would get through the battle unscathed while 1 out of 3 woukd be killed and 1 out of 3 would be wounded. The Allies did have immense ability to bomb from the air and to shell from ships but the Germans had a heck of a lot of guns too and a much better physical position up above looking down at Allied soldiers on the beaches. Overall I think that the Ukrainians are in a better situation to break through Russian lines then the Allies were to secure the beaches on D Day. On the other hand the Allies took a very long time to break out of Normandy and in fact even a month to just capture Caen even with many advantages and if the Ukrainians can gain only a short distance of a few kilometers and then stall for a month that won't be much good because they don't have the immense advantages that the Allies had over the Germans in Normandy. Though at least as far as I know Ukraine doesn't have those darn hedge rows. Plus the current Russian army is clearly much more incompetent and dysfunctional than the German army was in 1944 and the current Ukrainian army is generally much more experienced than the Allied armies were in Normandy in 1944. And I suspect that the Russian army will be running very low on tanks by September and I think that now unlike the Germans in 1944 the Russians have tanks that do very poorly against the enemy.

@PudubatPudubat actually the Americans took just over a month to defeat the Taliban in 2001. The fact that after 20 years they got fed up with waiting for the corrupt Afghan government and military to get their acts together and left doesn't change that.

@kryzzan7039 yes true. The Russian led Soviet Union knew when to quit in Afghanistan - when the country collapsed and fell apart and they no longer had any money to pay their soldiers' pay Soviet leaders thought "This might be a good time for the Soviet Union to quit the war in Afghanistan". .I suspect that when Russia is falling apart and it has no money to pay its soldiers some Russian leader will say to another Russian leader, "You know what? I'm thinking what with Russia being broke and falling apart maybe it's time we quit the war in Ukraine". And he will be right.

@andit8470 it's actually hilarious when you Russian trolls humilate yourself twisting yourself into a pretzel to try to pretend that catastrophic Russian failures are somehow Russian victories. The vast number of Russian soldiers who died pointlessly trying to take Bakhmut over the past 9 months don't share your happy view. Even the head of the Wagner criminal, terrorist organization realizes what a disaster Bakhmut has been for Russia. Time you woke up and saw the reality.
1
@robertsattler8201 it's amusing how you Russian trolls imagine that you can spout the same luducrous Russian propaganda out here in the real world with freedom and a free media as you can in Russia and get anyone to do anything but laugh at your nonsense. Best you stick with spouting Putin propaganda in Russia where people see only Russian state media and cannot speak truth and disagree with you unless they are willing to go to prison.

@andit8470 Russian troll lacking morality and credibility identified.

@PudubatPudubat where did you get the bizarre idea that if you just keep lying that it will some how make it true? The Americans defeated the Taliban and drove them from power in less than 5 weeks. Sorry if that annoys you. If you want to criticize the Afghan military for losing to the Taliban go ahead but I don't really see why you would bring that up. And it is funny how you pro-Russian trolls seem to forget that the Russian led Soviet army did so badly in Afghanistan that the Soviet Union ended up collapsing after the war. Don't be surprised if Russia falls apart after its disastrous invasion of Ukraine.
1
@drawings4youchannel123 no, no silly Russian troll. Get your Russian propaganda lies right. It wasn't one day - rather it was supposed to take 3 days for Ukraine to fall at the start of the war when they didn't have any western weapons coming in. How did that go by the way? Oh yes - Before they received western help the Ukrainians obliterated invading Russian columns invading from Belarus and those Russian terrorist invaders lucky enough to survive had to run as fast as they could back to Belarus while kindly leaving a lot of Russian militsry equipment as presents to Ukraine.
1
@Kgchjcc that's ok Russian troll. You just keep living in Nevernever Land and pretend that territory is Russian just because your deluded cult leader Putin wants to pretend it's Russian. The leaders of Jamaica or Tanzania could announce that those Ukrainian territories were part of their countries and it would have just as much meaning as when Putin pretends they're Russian. In other words no meaning at all. In fact I was thinking of announcing that I'm annexing Moscow and making it part of my possessions. If Putin can play make believe then so can I.
1
@samuela-aegisdottir Russian trolls also bragging about not taking Odessa. It's all part of their very secret, sneaky strategy that some time in future (possibly a century from now) they will reveal to the world. Lol.

@donm3844 Russian troll identified and causing immense laughter as he desperately tries to claim Russian catastrophe in Bakhmut involving vast waste of Russian military supplies and vast numbers of Russian deaths is a great Russian victory. I figure that at the rate of progress Russia has had in Bakhmut it should be able to take all of Ukraine in less than 2,000 years.... or at least it would except for the fact that Russia is going to run out of tanks this year and money and artillery shells next year and at some point Russian men will refuse to commit suicide on the Russian front lines just to satisfy Putin's desire for pointless and endless war. And of course to imagine that Russia will win in 2,000 years we have to pretend to forget the huge advances that Ukraine achieved on all 3 fronts and that there is a good chance they will be repeated.
1
@davidhess6593 you know that you're giving a huge insult to your cult leader Putin when you tell him that the guy who has made Putin's army look pathetic and dysfunctional and have to retreat on all 3 fronts was just an actor and comedian till lately and knew nothing of military matters? That's ok. I'm sure that Putin won't give you a prison sentence of longer than 20 years of hard labour for mocking and insulting him.
1
@SelfProclaimedEmperor also Ukraine did a large counter offensive North of Kiev early in the war. So successful thst they obliterated two Russian columns and drove those Russian invaders in the north right out of Ukraine while collecting Russian military equipment left behind.
1
Not sure how much difference this will make when Ukraine is on the offensive but if Ukraine launches a major attack this June (or even May) by then Russia will have far fewer tanks than it did last September and likely those remaining Russian tanks will be much older and out of date than the tanks Russia had last summer. Of course as well Ukraine will have some modern NATO tanks but I don't know if there will be enough to make a big difference.
1
@LazyRecap32 trying to be realistic I'm hoping that Ukrainian troops can reach the Black Sea by September, take Kherson region by December and Crimea by April 2024 and then as Russia nears bankruptcy hopefully Ukraine retakes the Donbas region at least by July 2024. Sorry if that sounds pessimistic. As always Putin could end the war any day by ending the invasion and pulling all his troops out of all of Ukraine.
1
@ShiroyashaGin drones can't be that effective against trenches as the front lines have barely moved in many months.
1
@CGplay186 every time Russia has launched unprovoked invasions of other countries to attempt to steal territory other countries said "Let Russia steal that territory. Then Russia will be satisfied and we will have peace" and every time this just emboldened the terrorist imperialist Russian dictatorship to launch another invasion to steal more territory from another country and exactly the same thing will happen again if other countries let Russia steal territory from Ukraine in this invasion. Let Russia steal more territory and given its imperialistic tendencies Russia will launch another invasion in another few years once it has rebuilt its military. The only way for terrorist imperialist Russia to learn to stop invading other countries is for Russia to suffer a devastating loss. Without that Europe will never have peace because there will be never ending unprovoked genocidal invasions carried out by the terrorist imperialistic Russian dictatorship.

@JohnCSmith-lp1qr the Ukrainian offensive hasn't happened yet. Very silly question.
1
@samuela-aegisdottir the Russian spring 2023 "offensive" reminds me of those movies in which a guy slams his fist into a giant of a man who just smiles in response as if it was nothing. And then if the guy is smart and quick he immediately turns and runs. Maybe given that nobody even noticed the Russian spring offensive It might be wise for Russian soldiers to just turn and run before Ukraine launches a counter attack.
