If it was just an age thing then all those young people in wealthy countries leaving churches in their youth would be returning to those churches after they turned 40 and those churches would be doing as well as ever but instead people who ate leaving churches in their youth aren't going back and so church attendance is collapsing across the developed world and even in the United States that's starting to happen And if you think that attitudes regarding the right of women to work and have equal rights and the right of LGBTQ people to have equal rights are going back to the attitudes of the 1950s you're wrong. Even in Republican states in the very religious United States referendums to protect the right to abortion have passed.

I wonder if part of the problem is that couples don't trust "pro-natalist" policies to stay in place if a new leader takes over or Orban simply changes his mind. Any time Orban could decide that the policies aren't working and are too expensive and contributing to the deficit and just get rid of them and then those people who had a first second, third or fourth child to take advantage of the policies will be left without any special government support or tax breaks and couples thinking of having a child know that could happen.
