I question the logic of risking a lot of lives and using a lot of resources to take towns or even cities directly, especially if they have already been destroyed and that includes Bakhmut and the towns around it. And I think that is how the Ukrainian military sees things. Taking a city or town in street to street or house to house fightihg can be very difficult and cost a lot in lives and resources. Taking control of roads, railways and bridges is important. Places of higher elevation to fire artillery from are important. Controlling at least one side of a river so it is hard for the enemy to advance is important. But i think that in their counter offensive around Bakhmut (not to be confused with the major counter offensive) Ukrainian forces are not going to waste lives trying to directly attack through Bakhmut or other towns if it is easier to advance through surrounding countryside and if doing so will still allow them to capture parts of the same roads and will allow them to threaten to surround Bakhmut and other towns occupied by Russians. Taking back empty countryside is not useless if it allows one to protect the roads used for one's supplies and cut off or threaten roads used by the enemy for it's supplies and to threaten to encircle the enemy.
