Sometimes in philosophy classes professors will ask what seem like ludicrous questions just to challenge students to think through their beliefs and preconceptions. Once a philosophy professor I had suggested to the class that the death penalty should apply to jay walkers. Students were understandably stunned and offended by his suggestion. But he gave the argument that if such a law existed then nobody would jaywalk so nobody would be executed and thus the problem of jaywalking would be eliminated with no negative consequences and surely things would be better if jaywalking disappeared. Just to be clear, the professor did not seriously want there to be a death penalty for jaywalking.
