No one fully understood the scale of corruption in Russia. Back in the 90's, when the USSR fell appart, the US sent advisers, to turn Russia into a western style economy, just like they did with Poland. The amout of pushback from the corrupt politicians was so great, that it failed miserably. The corruption only accelerated since then. Putin, and the "oligarchs" became the wealthiest people on earth through pulling funds from projects, directly into their pockets. We're talking hundereds billions of dollars. Putin and the oligarchs know that a guy like Navalny will be their demise, so they killed him, and they will kill everyone that comes even remotely close to threatning their status in Russia. They can only keep thier money, if Russia stays corrupt forever. The minute someone cleans it up, it will all be over for them. They know it, therefore, giving the amount of controll they have over Russia now, they will NEVER let it become an open state, where everyone has to answer for everything. As long as Russians are fed the hatred for the west, they will stay behind them, with minimal pushback. Especially when Russian media and lawmakers are state contolled.
