  1. My Dad worked in auto manufacturing for over three decades and got laid off for various reasons pretty regularly. He passed along some wisdom about how to manage it which has helped me get through getting laid off three times in the last 15 years. 1. Live below your means. Always. 2. Debt is slavery. If you can't pay cash, then you don't need it. 3. Maintain enough food and savings to cover your household needs for six months at all times. More if you can swing it. 4. Don't be a one tricky pony. Always have a side hustle that you can scale up if you need to. 5. The only person responsible for your ability to earn income is you, so choose your vocation wisely. 6. The best fruit tree is one that was planted ten years ago. The best vegetable garden is one you put in five years ago. Better to have them and not need 'em than to need 'em and not have them... and free fruits and veg makes for very friendly neighbors.
