Actually according to a former Soviet soldier turned Canadian citizen told me the Soviet Afghan war did not really affect the Soviet populace, there was a lot of censorship in the USSR so the populace was fed victory propogandas. and the Soviet army sent category C units from Central Asia whose republics did not hold the levers of power in hte USSR(the politically important Soviet republics were Russia, Ukraine and Belarus). supported by the elite Soviet VDV and Spetsnaz units. yes many Soviet troops died but it really did not affect the Soviet populace support of the war, however what affeted the Soviet populace was the economic cost of the war in Afghanistan was just another facet why the Soviet lost the war, it was the economy .

while the Kursk offensive is bad enough I think as many Russian mil bloggers like Igor Girkin think its just phase 1, Phase 2 is coming and even bigger and more ambitious than the Kursk blow. and many of them are pointing at Crimea . As I stated in an earlier video, an even worse event happening with be the collapse of an entire Russian army group. by a major Ukrainian offensive. I think the Ukrainians have carried out a masterful campaign of deception couple with the usual Russian victory propoganda that really fooled the Russians and I think this deception extends to Ukrainian reserve manpower which I think is still significant despite a lot of info coming from the Ukrainians that they have a manpower issue. I think they may have but its not as bad . and I think these reserves are being readied for another major offensive vs. the Russians which will inflict a blow so bad that it will have political repercussions on Putins hold on power.

I think a major battlefield victory by the Ukrainians will further weaken Putin political stability substantially and I think this whole operation is being shaped for that. I dont think the Putin gov will collapse in the even of a major Ukrainian operational victory but it will lead to that.

I think the Kursk offensive is paying off in many ways, 1. It has badly embarassed Putin and affected his political standing. 2. it has disrupted Russian supply lines in the area which is important to resupplying the Russian forces in Ukraine. 3. It is a political win for the Ukrainains. 4. also serves as a distraction for the real blow that is to come probably before the fall rains come in.
