All these leads to a stronger "peace faction" in the Japanese gov. advocating to ending the war in China and focusing on possible war with the USSR. Meanwhile Stalin seeing the only strong threat to it was Japan, wants to remove that threat once and for all, also Japanese military weakness in the Japanese defeat at Nomonhan 1939 encourages Stalin to strike as early as possible. Soviet military forces in the far east are still not ready for a general offensive vs. the Japaense in manchuria and Korea. so Stalin massively develops the logistical and transportation infrastructure in the far east and deploys massive amounts of men and materiel to confront the Japanese. Also Stalin increases military support to the KMT Chinese to further bog down the Japanese in China. 1940 war in China continues, despite offered British, French and American mediation, peace talks between the KMT and the Japanese break down. British , American and French military aid to the KMT also increases due to Japanese atrocities in China as well as perceived threats to their Asian holdings as well as numerous provocative incidents with the Japanese military. 1941, Japanese initiate Operation 5, a multi front campaign to seize the KMT capital at Chungking. with an operation larger than the battle of Wuhan 1938. There is also another major military clash between the USSR and Japan in Mongolia bigger than Nomonhan. While the Japanese capture Changsha, and batter the KMT forces the cost is expensive. The Japanese are nowhere near Chungking, the KMT chinese are still resisting, and the Japanes have lost even more men and materiel than wuhan 1938. Also the Japanese lost badly in the largest battle between Soviet and japanese forces to date in Mongolia. as a major part of the Japanese air force was busy vs. the CHinese. Stalin is now convinced the time is ripe to solve the Japanese problem and prepares for a SOviet offensive into Manchuria in 1942.

My view is that hitler could still have come into power but without the great depression, GB and the French would be more economically and even militarily powerful, US would be isolationist but would have the strongest and most developed economy by orders of magnitude compared to the other powers. WIth a more isolationist Republican gov. There would be no lend lease as the US does not want to be involved in another Great war. However the French and British would not have tolerated a German invasion of Czechoslovakia with stronger allied militaries. 2nd Great war would start in 1938 instead of 1939. No pact of steel with the Japanese and Italians. However those two powers and the USSR will be watching on the sidelines on how the war goes. The German invasion of Czechoslovakia turns out to be a disaster as the French and British intervene in the war. With the war bogged down for Germany as well as a naval blockade and embargoes , Poland and Hungary intervene vs. the Germans. Hitler is deposed in a coup and the German military and non nazi politicos take over. hitler flees to Italy. by 1939.

  3. 1942: Japanese still bogged down in CHina, Japanese economy more in the shits, more inconclusive battles in China with no end in sight. summer: Soviets invade Manchuria. while the SOviets make good initial gains, Soviets bog down in central Manchuria due to rugged terrain and fierce fanatical Japanese resistance. Japanese take the whole of Sakhalin sink most of the Soviet far east fleet and besiege Vladivostok. Soviets deploy more men and equipment to the far east. Japanese are bogged down in bloody siege to take Vladivostok which resists fiercely. the winter of 1942 is horrendous as while its bad for both sides, its esp. horrendous to the besieging Japanese as they are not prepared for it, General Chuikov, the SOviet commander at Vladivsotok uses his experience in China to bog the Japanese down in urban warfare. The SOviets build up for a massive offensive to break the siege. A massive Soviet offensive breaks the siege of Vladivostok in Feb 1943, massive disaster for the Japanese. Summer 1943, Japanese offensive in central Manchuria is a complete disaster.
