well here is my take, the Syrians sent thousands of mostly Allawite Shia Syrian troops to Russia to fight in the Ukraine war starting late 2022. from the most loyal units of the Syrian army, where they were treated as cannon fodder and thousands were kaput, these Syrians masqueraded as Russian army troops. So Assad had to fill up his army so he filled it up with local volunteers and of course with Syrian sunni troops and the SUnnis are the majority muslim sect in Syria but the rulers are Shiites. These Sunni troops consituted 75 percent of the Syrian army and the Syrian army was corrupt as hell, sold weapons and even intel to the rebels. also poorly trained, incompetent low morale and the sunnis hated the Assad regime. and the only ones who were effective vs. the rebels were Iranian IRGC and Hezbollah troops and Russian airpower and the thousands of Russian conscripts and hundreds of Russian Spetsnaz and PMC troops who were at the forefront of the fighting and were the most effective troops of the Assad regime, so when the Russians and Iranians withdrew , in the face of the rebel offensive it was game over, Assad's army fell apart in mass desertions and defections and so did the Assad regime.
