also NATO tank crews are a bit better trained than their Russian counterparts and more disciplined. Combine that with better crew comfort, user friendly handling, better electronics, better weapons designs. Also yah Javelins and NLAWs aka Tank breakeres(Twilight 2000 RPG) can massacre any tank type, for now the USA and NATO have it the Russians and Chinese dont. Russians are good NATO weapons test subjects, and ironically its their fellow Soviet republic Ukraine who is fighting for NATO. haha

@graze1177 yep as for economy, yah Soviets had huge breadlines due to faltering economy due to the crash in oil prices in the 80s. the USSR economy was much dependent on the sale of oil and natural gas to Western Europe, Ironic as they were their enemies. The rest of the warsaw pact and Soviet allies were a big burden to the Soviet economy as the SOviets were supporting their allies economies and militaries. which really drained their economy even when the SOviets were exploiting their allies natural resources in exchange for aid and weapons. Also the communist centralized command economy really did not work. which led to the collapse of the USSR.

yah I remember the 70s and 80s where the T-72s was the terror of NATO and yah it was feared no NATO tank can match them. The T-72 fared well in the 1982 Lebanon war, being a match to the Merkava 1, both tanks were about equal in performance in the war, T-72 had the same armor protection better gun. Merkava had much better crew survivability, better optics electronics and better crew training. Both sides lost a bunch of T-72s and Merkavas . However teh T-72 was superior to the other IDF tanks namely the M-60 and M48s.

Also the T-72 was also fielded in good numbers in Sri Lanka by the Indian army during its 90s intervention in Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Tigers destroyed a good number of T-72s using land mines. and the destroyed Indian T-72s suffered from the jack in the box effect, missing turrets. NOt widely known at the time .

Interestingly the T-72 went up against the Chieftain sucessfully during the early stages of the Iran Iraq war where T-72s knocked out Iranian Chiefteins suffering no losses. This was due to very poor quality of Iranian tankers who were students just trained for a few days in tank handling. Later Iraqi T-72s went up against Kuwaiti Chieftains in the invasion of Kuwait destroying a unknown number of T-72s and suffering no losses. Many Chiefteins were abandoned after running out of ammo and fuel.

I think the only western tank that was superior to the T-72 was teh UK Chieftain. in all aspects. In battlefield combat the Chieftein actualy withstood several hits from the 125mm rounds before going down.

@graze1177 yep I remember that time when we feared the Soviet and warsaw pact tank hordes would sweep across the Fulda Gap. with T-72s and T-80s , we were really aware of the big tank gap NATO had vs. the USSR. and warsaw pact. The only consolation is that NATO air power was of better quality however we were aware the Soviets had large numbers of aircraft. So the use of tactical nukes to stem the tide of the Warsaw pact offensive is a huge possibility.
