the Russians these days are mostly on the defensive, their regulars and conscripts are mainly in trenches except for the Donbass where they are using Penal convict troops as expendable assault troops in WW1 style human wave attacks, supported by massive artillery and air strikes,. This shows the Russians have lost overall operational offensive capabilities, they cannot rely on their regulars and conscripts to do major offensives since they are deemed to have poor morale, motivation and training. I think in ten months of war the Russians have realized this and are now trying to end the war with the Russians keeping their winnings, and regroup , reform and rebuild their army. Also Russian penal troops are expendable and they are being used to distract Ukrs forces from doing major offensives and give the Russians time to bulid their defenses train their troops.
