I think this is the case of more like the US and her allies managing the Ukraine war in a way that does not cause Russia do have its back to the wall and possibly use WMDs esp. nukes on Ukraine. Escalation management. The main proponent of this is Jake Sullivan and the atttitude of the USA presidential admin may change with a Kamala win in the elections and Sullivan out of the job as Kamala puts in a brand new National advisory team which I have heard is very much Pro Ukraine and giving Ukraine everything it wants. Also in the grand strategic goal of the USA is that the war ends with the following goals: 1. Putin is removed from power and replaced with a moderate or even pro western regime that they can do business with. 2. Russia does not go into civil war or a simliar type of situation. 3. the war does not escalate to a NATO war with Russia. 4. The Ukrainian gov does not collapse and Ukraine does not become conquered by the Russians or a puppet of Russia. This is why Ukraine's Allies are delaying military aid to Ukraine since if they gave everything Ukraine wanted, I think Ukraine would have already kicked the Russians out of Ukraine or at least delivered major and critical defeats to the Russian army like they did in late 2022 and with that happening would have rapidly collapsed the rule of Putin , and Russia most likely might have collapsed into a civil war type situation. which would have a massive world wide political and economic effect as the price of oil might have shot up rapidly and cause a worldwide economic recession. I think the USA is just watching the political situation in Russia and just waiting for a strong political faction to oppose Putin to emerge that is moderate enough to do business with . and I think in the current situation no such faction has emerged yet and Putin and his buddy Patrushev(FSB) seem to have full control of the Russian political landscape for now, however things can change as the war goes on as Russia's economy and political situation gradually degrades as the war slogs on esp. without major Russian victories and esp. with Ukrainain major victories(like what the Ukrainians are trying to do in Kursk).

and also the USA I suspect will want to end this war before the 2028 USA elections where most likely the rep party will take over the reins of the US gov(depending on where the Rep party stands in 2028), so with this , I think the Kamala harris gov will up the aid to Ukraine and loosen restrictions.As for Putin faced with a Kamala harris dem win this year, he will try to hang on until the 2028 USA elections , but as said many a time before, the longer this war goes, the more degraded Putin's political standing is and also degraded the Russian economy. and a Kamala harris win will result in a massive political tsunami in Russia, the Russian elites will probably think the war is lost and will be sharpening their knives to get Putin out of the Kremlin and save whatever is left of the Russian economy and military and focus on renewal of normal relations with the west their best customers and a focus on internal stability of the Russian state and healing and progressing the Russian economy.

@bernhardhaas8424 Unfortuantely that is what the American view is. Ukraine is a tool to bring down Russian power and possibly control Russia. Putin is stupid enough to fall for the Ukraine war trap and that will be Putin's most fatal decision which will destroy his life, legacy and regime.

from what I hear that Patrushev FSB has won the political power struggle for now with the imprisonment of various Russian army officers close to Shoigu Russian army. So the FSB is now helming the Russian gov and the direction of Russia's war in Ukraine. So while the Patrushev FSB has won the power struggle for now. the Shoigu GRU/Army is now down and out and still a strong force, so if the FSB flops, the Army will be in ascendant. Putin himself is a bit more closer to Patrushev FSB than he is to Shoigu so he favours the FSB a bit more however he has to counterbalance the FSB with the GRU/Russian army, since keeping both sides weak as to not being strong enough to overthrow Putin is imperative. However the Russian army leadership really does not like the FSB and being put under the military leadership of the FSB I think will be disastrous. since the army leadership might act in a way to throw the war .
