The US has lower violent crime rates than most developed nations. But I’ll tell you why US police are aggressive. It’s because they’re trained to use levels of aggression, like a continuum. This is similar to other developed nations, but in other developed countries, the police are usually taught to stay at the same level of aggression as the person they’re dealing with, and only increase their own level when the other person increase their’s. This is an attempt to deescalate, or at least not to antagonize. But American cops are trained and encouraged to stay one aggression level ABOVE the person they’re dealing with. This causes frequent escalation that results in police attacking nonviolent people and yelling at them to “stop resisting” when the person is lying on the ground and not resisting. This is why people who end up in fights with cops have visible injuries and the police usually don’t have a mark on them. Also, the US military has been fighting non-stop wars around the world since the millennials were old enough to go to war. Most cops are NOT military veterans, and they envy the admiration that war veterans receive. This is why police like to describe their beats as “war zones”. They want to be the military. They want to be treated like heroes. They even call themselves heroes. They’re always looking for a fight and they always place their own adrenaline rush above all else, including the safety of citizens. So while America is not a particularly violent place, the police are quite violent.
