Women were always included in the code of Chivalry, but not in the way people think. Love was considered one of the greatest virtues, so knights were expected to love a great lady -- a long distance love, not consummated, just part of their behavior. The idea behind it was to try to soften their edges, and to create greater loyalty to the liege lord. The treatment of women sort of developed out of that.
