@mithrandirthegrey7644 Wrong again. Argentina's problems were not due to tariffs they were due to socialism. I agree that extensive tariffs can be ruinous if also compounded with price and wage controls and socialism.

@mithrandirthegrey7644 No that is wrong. Austrian school foolishness. In College I had to track real wage growth and economic growth in several nations going back to the early 19th century. The periods with the most growth and prosperity coincided with relatively high tariffs. And recessions occurred in both high and low tariff regimes.

@mithrandirthegrey7644 your understanding seriously flawed. Peron was not a right winger at all. His economic policies were socialist.

@mithrandirthegrey7644 except that explanation does not work because you can see that effect in many different times and different types of economies. The empirical evidence for extreme free trade being good for the average citizen simply does not exist.

@mithrandirthegrey7644 wrong again. Here is an excerpt from an online discussion of Peron. Taxes went way up and were used for socialist policies. : Overall Impact on Taxation: By the end of his first presidency in 1955, it is estimated that total taxation as a percentage of GDP had risen significantly compared to pre-Perón levels. Estimates suggest that total public revenue increased from about 20% of GDP at the start of his presidency to approximately 30% by its conclusion. Conclusion on Tax Rates During Perón’s Tenure In summary, during Juan Perón’s leadership in Argentina from 1946 to 1955, taxes generally went up across various categories including personal income tax, corporate tax, and wealth taxes as part of an effort to finance extensive social programs and industrialization initiatives aimed at benefiting workers and reducing inequality.
