I think after the Cold War, the Europeans desperately wanted to believe they could put their violent, competitive past behind them. In some ways, I'm sad they could not. As an American, I simply can't even entertain the notion of putting our violent history in the past. We are not constrained by that ideal, and so it does not inhibit us.

@ The US security overwatch was never a carte Blanche guarantee. It was just supposed to be a shield so the Europeans could rebuilt their defense capability. The US taxpayer was never supposed to foot all the bill for the alliance’s defense needs. But the Europeans never rebuilt their defense, even after Russia broke the peace of Europe by invading Ukraine in 2014.
