The EU standards are minimum standards, many countries have better protections than the UK, but sure, the UK could lower its standards significantly without violating the level playing field. Makes you wonder how far the Torys want to reduce protections.
"On the fisheries, the UK and Ireland previously agreed fish by consent. Ireland is now part of the EU, who now negotiates for them, thus those previous allowances are void. Of course they are a bargaining chip."
The same is true for fishing rights of French fishers, Dutch fishers, German fishers, ..... All these rights predate the EU, just like for Irish fishermen. The Brexiteres made this a bargaining chip.
