The standards of each member country are higher than for the EU. That is the principle of a minimum threshold. The question is not what the standards are at the moment, but what they will become in the future.

@lewisbrand It seems you cannot read. Any country has higher standards than the EU. Many countries have standards significantly higher than in the UK. But much worse, if you do not want to lower your standards you could agree to the level playing field, the fact that the UK does not want to sign this means you want to lower your standards. That is the only logical reason.

@shelleyphilcox4743 Well, the changing EU standards of course. You want similar access to the common market as Switzerland has, so you have to expect similar alignment to EU rules. Well, maybe your deal will be more similar to Turkey.

@shelleyphilcox4743 Correct, but you want acces to the common market for services, this is a much greater acces than granted for Canada or Japan, it is a similar acces to Switzerland, but with more cherrypicking. But it would be madness to grant you access to the market for services without your banks being bound by the same rules as in the EU. By the way, it will take at least till August 2021 until your borders are ready for any type of Brexit.

@shelleyphilcox4743 It would be extremely stupid to allow financial services in the EU not bound by ECJ ruling. Without a level playing field, there is absolutely no chance for passporting rights for banks in the UK. US banks still need dependencies in the EU, something the City profited from until now. The Finance industry is extremely flexible. They can found or enlarge dependencies in the EU, or move headquarters. The all the financial industry needs to operate are office buildings. They do not have any heavy equipment.

Makes you wonder how far the Torys want to reduce protections. "On the fisheries, the UK and Ireland previously agreed fish by consent. Ireland is now part of the EU, who now negotiates for them, thus those previous allowances are void. Of course they are a bargaining chip." The same is true for fishing rights of French fishers, Dutch fishers, German fishers, ..... All these rights predate the EU, just like for Irish fishermen. The Brexiteres made this a bargaining chip.
