This is the story that deserves 24/7 attention, not the missing people who signed up for a $250,000 per seat trip to visit the Titanic wreck and who all accepted the risk in exchange for the adventure of the experience. Empathy is a muscle. Use it or lose it.

@SapphireX413 - I say that like I recognize real tragedy [versus] a myopic fixation on billionaire thrill-seekers who expect the public to bail them out of trouble with our tax dollars when the unproven and experimental adventure submersible goes missing. They signed away their right to sue in order to take that trip. They should sign a second contract committing to pay for their own rescue, whether it is successful or not.

@johncollins3391 - The fallacies in your assertion are widely understood by those who know how capital creation works. The waste and hedonism in the whole adventure tourism industry is destructive and economic parasitism, not job creation. The wealthy as a whole consume far more than they produce and have a hugely negative impact on the standard of living of others, not a positive one -- exceptions notwithstanding.

@jujuuuuu1851 - Thanks for replying. Sadly, I understand that part of the problem as well. The part of the problem which contributes to a lack of empathy is our own unexamined bias when we disproportionately offer compassion in the face of tragedy to those in which we most recognize ourselves.

@lewishague123 - Regarding your own comment, you should understand that OceanGate and Stockton Rush operate in international waters so they aren't under any nation's regulations. Regulation isn't relevant. Rush even mocked the industry's voluntary safety guidance while lying about following it in order to assuage customer fears.
