Authoritarian fascism is anathema to diplomatic decency in every way. Lawlessness should be met with severe consequences.

All war criminals must be held to account, and the horrors unleashed upon Asia during the cold war era lead the list. This being said, appropriate concern about civilian casualties in Ukraine arises because Russian civilian deaths in war zones after 1980 are many factors worse than that of any western power. Civilian deaths during Russian hostilities in Afghanistan (9 years): 850,000 to 2,000,000 Civilian deaths during US hostilities in Afghanistan (20 years): 40,000 to 100,000

This is the story that deserves 24/7 attention, not the missing people who signed up for a $250,000 per seat trip to visit the Titanic wreck and who all accepted the risk in exchange for the adventure of the experience. Empathy is a muscle. Use it or lose it.

The community did what it has historically done for decades, both when they warned OceanGate before their first trip to the wreck of the Titanic, and through this massive and expensive, taxpayer-funded rescue operation, as well as after the tragic, but predictable truth was revealed.

This should become Putin's goodbye speech.

Work on vernacular and punctuation. This sample is clearly subpar as an example of posing as a "Regular Johann" European voice. Essentially, "your Kremlin is showing".

Gibraltar: I've built walls... A fortress deep and mighty... That none may penetrate... I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pains... It's laughter and it's loving I disdain... I am a rock I am an island.
6
As usual, the right-wing has selective hearing, it was a "public area" so the idea that the President's family is connected to this incident is beyond a flimsy claim.

@JJmetaphysics - You can dispute the accuracy of the data from the sources¹ ², but they aren't baseless numbers. ________________ ¹ Stanford University, Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW), International Peace Research Institute Oslo ² The Watson Institute for International Public Affairs at Brown University, Tufts University, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan

Keep walking, and don't come back if you don't believe in the U.N.
5
@kampalaGhosts - Getting war and peace twisted because of Putin is pathetic. NATO didn't invade Ukraine. No invasions in 2014 and 2022 means no war. If Russia wants peace, they only need to leave Ukraine.
4
Blaming the crimes of humanity on a common "inner wickedness" instead of uniting to arrest and prosecute those criminals will do nothing to bring about a better world.
3
3:32 - "If you believe in everything a leader...says and does without question, that can have tragic consequences." Нет войне!

I'll finish mourning the loss of hundreds of people from the capsized boat off the coast of Greece before I go shedding a tear for these five. What a colossal waste of money on a massive and multi-million dollar rescue attempt for people who spent $250,000 on themselves to go thrill-seeking on an experimental and unproven billionaire tourist attraction 99.99999% of us will never contemplate because we aren't obscenely self-indulgent billionaires.
3
The Russian approach to the Minsk Agreements is to violate them again and again until the core tenets like the cease-fire are rendered meaningless, then complain when the Ukrainians retaliate. New day, same old story.
3
@katlopez4497 - I'm not criticizing a lack of perfection. I'm criticizing a lack of accountability. You can put a gag order upon yourself because you are a hypocrite if you don't call out Western abuses of power. I do call out Western abuses of power, and Eastern abuses of power alike and will not gag myself for authoritarian regimes.
2
@DanteLovesPizza - To wit: "[How communist is China?] Not very. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, China has all but abandoned the tenets of classical marxism, including collective ownership of the means of production. Nowadays, just about everything is at least partly privatized. Whereas the Chinese Communist Party under Chairman Mao owned every factory and farm in the nation, the economy is now a patchwork of public and private businesses."
2
@forkrust9296 - It's just a lighthearted joke based on a 1960s U.S. folk rock song. Gibraltar should determine its own future, and afaik, they've always understood the value of positive relations and trade.
2
This guy is already planning his escape from Russia when the new collapse comes.
2
@WETiLAMBY - Do you have a citation for that, by chance?
2
@EvilDemon69 - Few criticized it, and it's a valid point. A number of progressive Democratic members of Congress in the US condemned it, but that's wholly insufficient. That said, it was a case of targeting being misplaced, not a case of the US committing indiscriminate killing of civilians, of which there are numerous examples across history. Two wrongs don't make a right. Two illegal invasions don't make a humanitarian intervention. Killing civilians should always be condemned, indiscriminate killing of civilians in particular must be condemned.

Now, we find out Putin poisoned Abramovich and two Ukrainian negotiators in early March. "The Russian oligarch and at least two senior members of the Ukrainian delegation developed symptoms that included red eyes, constant and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands, sources familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal."

Political gulags. Forced labor camps. Forced displacement of entire villages. Summary executions. Rape as a weapon of genocidal aggression. China and Russia are autocratic birds of a feather.
2
Every time the Russians are driven out, the evidence of torture and war crimes emerges. Don't believe Russia's lies.
2
You'd almost think Russian promises under Putin are never to be taken at face value. Almost.
2
@SapphireX413 - I say that like I recognize real tragedy [versus] a myopic fixation on billionaire thrill-seekers who expect the public to bail them out of trouble with our tax dollars when the unproven and experimental adventure submersible goes missing. They signed away their right to sue in order to take that trip. They should sign a second contract committing to pay for their own rescue, whether it is successful or not.
2
@johncollins3391 - The fallacies in your assertion are widely understood by those who know how capital creation works. The waste and hedonism in the whole adventure tourism industry is destructive and economic parasitism, not job creation. The wealthy as a whole consume far more than they produce and have a hugely negative impact on the standard of living of others, not a positive one -- exceptions notwithstanding.
2
@jujuuuuu1851 - Thanks for replying. Sadly, I understand that part of the problem as well. The part of the problem which contributes to a lack of empathy is our own unexamined bias when we disproportionately offer compassion in the face of tragedy to those in which we most recognize ourselves.
2
No conspiracy of men can hold back the hands of time forever. The Taliban -- like any religious, governmental, cultural, or political body -- only expands or expends its political capital. This is expending political capital without expanding it.
2
@kubura762 - You seem unfamiliar with human history, as this attitude is by no means isolated to one religion, culture, or region. Islamophobia is utterly droll.
1
Putin doesn't love you back. Your fealty is obvious.
1
2020: Watch this... 2021: ...Not bad. But hold my beer. 2022: ...Hold all the beers!

Ice soldiers can't revolt against Putin either.
1
Peace before the removal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory is just alliance with Russia.

deeptips3310 - I don't reply to spammers. You can keep your copypasta link.

@nabivelgadiariestv5867 - False equivalence and whataboutism isn't a counterpoint. Also, she has faced consequences in the U.S., and fled on her own...she wasn't shielded or flown out by the U.S. government, who cooperated on her case. "American citizen Anne Sacoolas was sentenced to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, at the Old Bailey in London for causing the death of British teenager Harry Dunn in a fatal traffic collision in August 2019, meaning she will not have to go to jail." "Sacoolas pleaded guilty in October to causing death by careless driving, punishable by up to five years in prison." "She admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road when she hit the 19-year-old motorcyclist outside a US military base in England, where her husband worked as a US diplomat."
1
@nabivelgadiariestv5867 - You still haven't addressed the issue at hand. Keep carrying water for authoritarians as you wish. Bye forever.
1
@DanteLovesPizza - As I mentioned earlier, the communism is a lie fed to the domestic Chinese population. The authoritarian oligarchy running the state subsidized, privately held profit capitalist system in China is not communist in any way.
1
@malakatan3235 - Stay on topic, Xi troll.
1
@DanteLovesPizza - You keep believing China is communist. The financial and political world will continue to know the facts.
1
@isaacisaac2380 - Stay on topic, China apologist.
1
@DanteLovesPizza - The current CCP has as much to do with Marxism and communism as Putin does. In short, no[thing] at all.
1
The right in many liberal democracies are unabashedly corrupt. In fact, they are often gloating over their own lawlessness. Friends don't let friends vote for criminals posing as conservatives.
1
It appears Putin had to trick many of his own troops, they're saying they were told to deploy for training exercises at the border, then forced to invade or be shot.
1
I don't believe anything Russia releases. If it is true, however, a hearty thank you to Ukraine for defending themselves and potentially benefiting the world by ridding it of this Stalin wannabe.
1
Religious nationalism, whether in Iran or in the Republican party¹ in the U.S., always ends in dictatorship and violent oppression. ____________________________________________ ¹ 56% of Republicans want the U.S. turned into a Christian nationalist state despite knowing it's unconstitutional in the U.S. (71%).
1
Hamas doesn't have any civilians. Israel has civilians, and only Israel. Gaza is a part of Israel. Full stop.
1
@drg8687 - Frankly, I'd greatly appreciate the prosecution of them, Obama and Biden, and Trump and Pence for continuing the targeted assassination program that is drone killings.
1
When is it determined that Kim Jong-Un is holding Putin's beer? What a ghastly submission to the Murderous Dictators Hall of Infame.
1
Putin has no integrity. The abandoning of dead soldiers bodies is par for the course in Putin's Russia.
