One possibility some observers with credibility have brought to the discussion is that this was planned and amounts to these facts: 1) Prighozin was going to be demoted and Shoigu would take over Wagner. 2) Belarus is facing possible instability, Prighozin's closest kept forces are reportedly now with him in Belarus, while the rest of Wagner forces have returned to their positions in the war in Ukraine. 3) The Northern front, only 530km from Kyiv, now has not only Prighozin's best and him, but also the forces deployed to cut him off on the way to Moscow stationed right at the Northern front on with Ukraine and right next to Prighozin's best in Belarus. 4) Most of the Western media and talking heads let their appetite for Putin's humiliation sideline their suspicions, as did the pro-Ukraine populations online. Putin, Russia, and Lukashenko's reputations would spin 180° if Kyiv falls next Spring. 5) Wagner got strangely far toward Moscow with bizarrely little resistance. But they also got exactly far enough to then conveniently "hang a left" toward Belarus with relatively little fuel or time wasted.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I take this possibility for what it is -- One possibility that some people who know much, much more than I do are discussing as such. I don't know, and know my speculation is weightless compared to Ian, the people calling it a humiliation and weakness for Putin, or the people raising this possibility, or any other truly informed opinion.
