Dude, I liked most of your mini-doco, BUT...but...you have done some poor research here. The R-16 disaster was not part of the manned space programme, it was a an ICBM. The launch vehicle was never used for manned space flight. It had nothing to do with "rushing forward to beat NASA". The R-16 and the manned space programme were two different genetic lines, shall we say. The General in charge (Marshal Nedelin) of the R-16 programme when it was being tested wanted to sit near the missile (with his entourage) as it was being de-fueled after some technical failures and the hypergolic fuels exploded. Also at the 11:30 min mark you show a Soyuz spacecraft but call it a "Vostok". If you look at a Vostok and Soyuz (the spacecraft, not the R-7 Launch vehicle with that name), you will see they are very different.
