  7. In 1980 i was in vehicle maintenance at Ramstein AB Germany. One day at lunch time, an officer came in to the shop, i was the only one in at the time. He came up to me and said he thought there was something wrong with the government vehicle he had just been issued. I asked him what was wrong. He said he just filled it up, it only held a couple of gallons and the gas gage still showed almost empty. I asked what vehicle is it. He said Volkswagen pickup. I kept my military bearing and asked him to show me. The government pumps were right outside the shop. I suspected what he did. Those were rear engine vehicles back then, and the dipstick a d oil fill was behind the license plate. Sure enough, he filled the crank case full of gas. I explained what he did and showed him where the gas tank filler was. He was a young lieutenant and i was a young airman. He was worried about such a mistake so early in his career. I said, it is lunchtime and noone else is around, let me see what i can do. Fortunately he had not tried to start it. So, i got my tools, new filter, etc. And did an oil change for him right at the pumps. Kept him from getting a vehicle abuse write up. Went on his merry way and i forgot about it. A couple of months later my boss came up with a puzzled look on his face. Turns out i was getting an incentive ride on an AWACS. Radar plane that spied on the Russians. He asked why was i getting the ride. I said i had no clue. He shook his head and said they asked for you by name. Come ro find out, the lieutenant i helped out was the navigation officer for the AWACS. Im not surprised anymore about people not knowing how to put gas in their car.
