The metre is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458th of a second. Can you fire up your millionth-of-a-second stopwatch and fire a chemical laser, and time it's path, to show me the distance of a meter, on the street? No. As a scientist I use SI extensively, daily, but it's but one of many equally useful systems of measure.
