I have a friend who is a very successful software engineer, used to work for the dept of defense, and he missed out on a job with his dream employer, Nintendo, because in his interview he was asked to label a block diagram between ram and a hard disk and he had no clue what it was called. Before getting dismissed, the older engineer doing the interview gave him a minutes long lecture on what a "bus" is in computer architecture. I was shocked by this, as a former hardware engineering student, and his reply to my surprise was "I just write code, how am I supposed to know how hardware works, we never covered that in college".
