Germans were historically the second largest ethnic group to settle in America. It is surprising that so few German words were adopted early on in American English. This is possibly due to America receiving a great deal of literary works from England in our early decades. It appears that Americans adopted variants of many German foods as opposed to their English counterparts. A nineteenth century popularity ( continuing ) of German philosophy possibly contributed many loaner words from German where English had no comparable word or concept. As the history of the English language and it's American dialect are a mixture of Saxon, Danish and Norman French it is obvious that the English world was very flexible about adopting ( and adapting ) words from many languages. Particularly in the US where we have a considerable number of words adopted from Tagalog. i.e. "Boondocks". Spanish words are becoming increasingly popular. Thankyou for the great videos.
