@upstairs1307 In fact, the Constitution only provides for the state legislature to appoint the electors. This is because STATES ELECT THE PRESIDENT, not individuals. A compromise was made so that more populated states have more electors. In our earliest elections the majority of states did not hold elections for President at all, the electors were just appointed by the legislature. Over time, the states decided to allow the public to choose who the electors would be. It was and still is the prerogative of the state legislature. This decision appears to be addressing the massive campaign in late 2016 to persuade Trump electors to violate their oath and switch their vote, literally hijacking the election from the voters. SCOTUS just said: "Let's not."

There was a time when I was a child when the USA allowed the majority to rule unchecked. And then the Civil Rights Act was passed. People really only want "majority rule" when they are among the majority. Ours is a nation that allows minority opinion a say in our governance.

That course was replaced in public schools by "gender studies".

@heroclix0rz "The popular vote" is and has always been irrelevant. States elect the president. Read that Constitution sometime.

Ralph's Place The Constitution allows the state legislature to select the Electors. What if your state legislature dislikes the poll predictions and takes back their RIGHT to choose the electors for you ( as a matter of conscience, of course ). You only get to vote for the President because your state legislature permits it as their means of choosing.
