  1. Yes they were ... with just a tiny difference: they belonged to "the land" instead of "an owner" directly and could not move from the land they were belonging to. He also forgets to mention that "having the right to farm the land" wasnt everything, because the serf also had to pay TAXES, which could be quite brutal. Making the comparison to tenants is STUPID, because a tenant CAN MOVE AWAY from your "overlordship" and a serf could not. Here in Germany the overlords also had something called "the right of the first night" ... which was basically the right to SPEND THE WEDDING NIGHT WITH THE BRIDE ... if the landlord fancies her. No idea if this gets left by the wayside ... but I am out after 4 minutes.
