  3. I think the GDR had 17% of its population as "agents who [had to] report to the STASI". Many of them were forced by threats to the family OR restricting certain career options, but there are people who actually BELIEVE in the ideology. The city of Dresden is surrounded by mountains, so they could not receive west german TV signals (no idea about radio) ... and the area was called "the valley of the clueless" ... which is why they had a larger proportion in the border force of the GDR and a saxon accent was standard while being checked going from West Germany to West-Berlin.
