There was an article by a literature/language professor in a newspaper on "how to talk to the right-wingers here in Germany" about a year ago and this professor never said anything about the arguments you could bring to the table and only talked about "stylistic tricks that could make you win a discussion". tl;dr "Literature critics" have been left-leaning since forever ... and this shapes their perception.   5. That quote is a bit stupid/naive, because you need more government (actually: bureaucracy) the more people are in your country. If you have "the wild open west" you dont need a lot of government, but if you have New York and its population density you need cops, people fixing roads and "city plumbing", schools, support for ("high") arts, ... and the current trend of Google, Twitter, Facebook & Co. clearly shows that private companies NEED some "opposing force" to protect the population from their dominance and one-sidedness. The problem is NOT "the government" as a system, the problem is "the INDOCTRINATED (= one-sided/non-objective) people making up this governement". THIS is the big problem we are facing ... the UNACCOUNTABILITY of bureaucrats for shit they do ... like wasting money on "too grand stuff" that people dont want. An example is our very own "scandal airport" here in Berlin, which has taken 10+ years to build by now and has cost BILLIONS that the state of Berlin doesnt have. No bureaucrat or politician will ever be held accountable for all the stuff that went wrong with that.

They dont send plasma ... they send a meteor (as shown and stated in the movie) ... and you simply have to assume that the bugs - who can colonise planets in other solar systems - have a way of "opening a warp gate to allow a rock to travel these distances". This doesnt really solve the issue of "how could the bugs AIM that rock over such a huge distance" ... which needs VERY precise calculations (after all ... once the rock is sent on its way there is no more course correction). Oh and another issue with the movie is that they "intercept"/"randomly encounter" the rock while in hyperspace, which has probably the same odds as winning the jackpot of 10 lotteries in one day. This is something that requires you to "suspend your disbelief" ... and it is for you to decide if it breaks the movie enough to make it bad. For me it is a minor issue ...

  24. I only listened to the book last week but I dont think the movie is that terrible because it contains the core elements of the society ("service guarantees citizenship") to a point. Obviously it had to be "spiced up" with a little love story and including a pretty girl in it, but Veerhoeven failed at turning it into an anti-fascist piece and the "would you like to know more?" propaganda clips are actually quite perfect. There are technical reasons for them not depicting the combat armor and instead going for "mass infantry" instead ... and the story of the book would have been a bit dry as a movie because there is too much "thinking" going on which cant really be shown on screen.

Personally I usually played "find the city" with a friend during geography class ... where we took turns to name a tiny city/village from a map in our book. I did train as a material scientist and in the course of that had several courses about "materials to use with radioactive materials", i.e. for nuclear power plants. From these courses I would have to come to the conclusion that "nuclear power plants can be safe". Having lived through the nuclear desasters of Chernobyl, Fukushima and Asse (a nuclear dump site here in Germany ... signed off by Angela Merkel when she was minister for ecology under Helmut Kohl ...) I have to say that this conclusion is FALSE ... because there are ALWAYS humans involved in it and humans make mistakes, which were the cause for all three of these desasters.

It is also impossible to travel halfway across the galaxy in less than a few thousand years ... the point is that bugs obviously have a way to enter hyperspace where these things are possible and since they spread by "sending spores into space" it is possible for them to make asteroids enter hyperspace. They are an intelligent race and do have technology of their bodies, i.e. are able to evolve certain characteristics. P.S.: To be able to HIT the bugs must be able to SEE the target in the first place ... and that is another feat they need to have mastered.

The movie has loads of things in it it doesnt need/didnt happen (the whole "girl stuff"), but it uses it to tell things which Rico himself didnt experience. The only thing that is really missing/changed is the armor suits ... but I would say they werent really ready for that kind of CGI/filmmaking at the time it was made AND it could have added a bit too much "technical jargon" which might have made it boring. I dont like the girl stuff, but Carmen is extremely pretty ... so it is acceptable to watch.

  54. Nah ... not military service (which is pointless unless you are at war). You could also have other awful work like sewer cleaning, care of old people and so on as possible choices. Stuff that people usually dont like to do and that is tedious. We used to have the draft here in Germany and you could choose a non-military service too, which included such jobs. The idea of the draft to make everyone SERVE SOCIETY for a time is quite good IMO.
