  3. Ukraine never had nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union had nuclear weapons, some of which had been stationed on land that later became Ukraine. Ukraine only exists because it let Russia take back the nuclear weapons. Russia would not have allowed Ukraine to be created unless Ukraine was nuclear-free. There was no way that Russia would allow a nuclear-armed new independent country to be created right on its border.
