Cities consist of a majority of people that want things done for them, from social services, to unions to public transportation, therefore they want a bigger government with more control to provide for them. Rural areas consist of a majority of people who want to do for themselves, therefore they want a smaller government that will leave them alone and stay out of their way.

You have a ready-made example at hand: New York City. Look at how New York was run under various different parties and how the city fared in those situations. Would anyone in their right mind think that New York before or after Juliani was/is a better place?

So being around other cultures and other languages drives people to grow increasingly authoritarian and push towards lawmaking that decreases peoples' freedom of speech and other rights? That seems like a long shot. Also, "Just take a cab there one day." XD I'm guessing you think that conservatives are conservative because they aren't educated.

@helios2664 Interesting that you read enough context into a simple generalization that you felt the need to personally insult me. I shouldn't feed the trolls, but I'll rise to the bait this time. Your comparisons are naive, ignorant or both. Government has grown to become a self serving entity that no longer has the goodwill of the people as its first and foremost function. The larger the government unit the more true this is. I've lived in multiple big cities, from Seattle to Denver to Manhattan and the quality of life in the smaller rural communities is not only significantly better, but communities (the things where people actually do rely on and help one another) still exist in those rural areas in ways that the cities lost decades ago. It's not lost on me that you had to reach all the way back to the 1800's to provide examples of quality of life improvements that cities offered over a way of life that doesn't even exist in the modern world. The fact that you even equate rural life to subsistence farming shows that I'm not the one that lacks perspective.
