  4. I am really getting fed up with the EU pushing for a deal with the UK. If this was Greece or some East European country this wouldn't happen. I do not understand why the EU is giving the UK all these chances after all the tribulations and animosity. I know that the economic impact will be there, but so be it. We are a 20 trillion dollars economy collectively, and there are over 450 million Europeans. I believe in the European project, but you must let go of the British.

The position of the UK as a financial center is diminishing: in the next month the new ranking will appear of all financial centers worldwide; I bet the UK will now rank 4-5th. Frankfurt is rapidly becoming a deep and broad oriented financial center and will enter the top 10 within 6 months.

  9.  @leotran9259  Unfortunately, I have to agree with you: it was a pitiful act by Barnier. If this would have been Greece, the EU would not shirk to disengage negotiations. I take issue with the subsumption of an economic argument in a political matter, and in spite of the genuine problems some countries have with the UK sidestepping EU regulations, the EU is forcing efforts to reach a deal. I do hope that Boris will push for a no deal, and Barnier stops the unauthorized political meddling.

  10. Because they are part of the EU and they signed up to the responsibilities accompanying EU membership. They also find it perfectly normal to receive vast amounts of money from the EU; so, why not open to burden sharing?

  12.  @j.mangum7652  I do not understand why the EU continues the negotiations with the UK. Come on; you and I know that a no-deal Brexit is inevitable. Boris and his gang will make sure no-deal Brexit is the only outcome possible because Trump and his gang are threatening Britain that they should buy their GMO food and import tortured meat. Now, the EU has certain regulations in place that are at odds with the US's agricultural policies and since the UK wants a trade deal with the US because Trump is threatening them (also in terms of tariffs) and the US wants to export tortured meat and freakishly shaped fruits to the UK, a no-deal Brexit is imminent.

  14.  @mikkokarkkainen2807  We just made sure that EU countries cannot resist economic integration. I want the EU to be given new powers to force reform in some EU countries. The financial stimulus package will ensure that countries become economically innovative. Innovation is important because we are living in a rapidly changing environment in which family-business economies do not suffice anymore. We need to push each other in the right direction (the stick) and use it, i.e. the stick, as an instrument to hold each other accountable. We can intervene in decisions made by the Italian government for example and thereby mitigate the consequences of a populist government.

  18. Post-brexit there will be "no" free trade deal for the UK with the largest economic bloc and certainly no service-related FTA. But it does not matter anymore; you get to have a democratically decided outcome. Enjoy.

  19.  @shadzrob1234  I do economics for a living, and I know about international lists, and I know how the UK compares to the EU-15 in most domains. You are unresponsive to suggestions made by me and others that there is evidence showing that the position of the UK is tanking in this world (concerning how well it compares to other countries): you phlegmatically refute that this is true. Very well. Eventually, you and I live our separate lives in different and now disparate countries. I have only sporadically met British people, and most of those encounters only made me realize that I can go without exposure to a wide array of socio-cultural flavors. I only care about efficiency and how effective a country is compared to other countries: I keep an eye on all kinds of international lists, and I feel quite complacent about the EU's (EU-15) position in this world. I want a no-deal Brexit because I enjoy the idea of comparing a $US 3 trillion economy to a $US 20 trillion economy. I also enjoy the prospect of a United States of Europe; that just was made easier with the departure of the British as well as the further economic and political integration of the EU institutions. Imagine how effective we will get.

  23.  @carolimagnusroman4972  I agree, Italy can only do it's best, but the rest should be solidary. This is the problem: we have a solidarity problem in Europe. We are working on it, but meanwhile we need to accept that we need other solutions to assuage this migration problem. I think we should artificially create a zone in Europe where all refugees must domiciliate.
