One of my engineers (retired) was a Russian immigrant. Brezhnev rounded up and un-lifed most of his and his wife's families. He and his wife escaped in the '80s. Their American born daughter got a full ride academic scholarship to Berklee. She came home after her first semester and told her parents that they were stupid for abandoning the communist Utopia of Belarus. And how Brezhnev must have had a good reason for dealing with her grandparents the way he did. And wanted to know why they didn't appreciate everything their government did for them. She was immediately cut off financially. He didn't even pay her plane fare back. She was forced to get a job if she wanted to eat. After another semester she dropped out really believing that her parents owed it to her for forcing her to be born in America. When he passed over a decade later they were still estranged.

In the late 80's Mayor Sidney Barthelemy caused a mass exodus of the downtown central business district. In a couple of years it went from near 100% occupancy to 15%-20%. It took three decades before it started to turn around. That was one mayor. Imagine how long it will take to turn around decades of stupidity in California.

@iamkesha. I had another engineer from Russia. His entire body was covered with scars from the KGB burning him while hanging him upside down. His crime? He said that one day he'd like to visit the US. Jimmy Carter actually pressured the Soviets to let him immigrate.
